The skin barrier is the outermost layer’s defense system, a wall of skin cells held together by lipids that keeps water in and irritants out, and nearly every skin complaint traces back to it in some way. When the barrier is intact, skin looks calm, hydrated, and resilient, and when it breaks, the result is dryness, tightness, redness, and a cascade of sensitivity that no product seems to fix.The structure is a brick wall, with dead skin cells as the bricks and lipids, chiefly ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, as the mortar. This arrangement blocks water loss and keeps allergens and bacteria from entering, and it maintains a slightly acidic pH that supports healthy skin. The barrier is constantly renewing itself, but it can be overwhelmed when too much is asked of it at once.Barrier damage comes from predictable sources. Over-exfoliating with strong acids, using harsh cleansers that strip the lipids, and skipping moisturizer all weaken the wall, as do cold weather and hot showers.
