Niacinamide, the amide form of vitamin B3, has earned its reputation as one of the most studied ingredients in skincare, and the data points to a clear sweet spot around 5 percent. At that concentration, controlled studies show meaningful improvements in pore appearance, sebum regulation, and skin barrier function, while higher percentages add irritation without proportionally better results. The research is unusually consistent. A well-cited twelve-week study found that a 5 percent niacinamide product reduced sebum and visibly refined pore texture, and separate work shows 2 to 5 percent improves barrier markers like ceramide synthesis. Below 2 percent the effects taper off quickly, which is why products advertising trace amounts rarely deliver the change their labels imply, and why 4 to 5 percent has become the standard clinical range.Going higher does not help much. Formulations at 10 percent exist largely to satisfy consumers who assume more means stronger, but the evidence does not support that assumption, and the higher load raises the odds of redness and stinging, especially
