Fragrance is one of the most common causes of skin reactions in cosmetics, and it is a frequent reason dermatologists steer sensitive skin away from scented products. The ingredient exists purely for smell, provides no skin benefit, and yet it is responsible for a large share of the contact dermatitis that sends people to the clinic, which makes it a needless risk for reactive skin. The problem is that fragrance is a mixture of many chemicals, some of which are known allergens, and the skin can become sensitized to them over time. Even natural fragrances, from essential oils like lavender and citrus, are not safer, and in fact they are among the more common triggers, because the sensitizing compounds are the same whether they come from a lab or a flower. The clean and natural marketing around these oils does not reduce their allergic potential. The reaction can be subtle or delayed, which is why fragrance is so often overlooked as the cause. It may show up as persistent redness, stinging, or small bumps rather than an obvious rash, and because the reaction builds slowly, people rarely connect it to the scented product they have used for
